Embassy Friday

With the Olympics starting on Friday, there is no better way to start your weekend, than to sprint on down to Embassy, hurdle the bouncers and hop, skip and jump your way to the bar. (Please note that hurdling the bouncers is not recommended!) Last week was packed from start to finish, with many people wanting to turn the night into a marathon, rather than a 100 metre sprint, so make sure you get yourselves on the guestlist and wait for the starter's orders!

Prince rocking it

The one and only Prince was spotted at The Green Door shortly before 1 A.M. August 3rd. It was the lo hi fi night there also known as rock night at the club.

Unlike in previous visits, Prince did not join the band for a jam session. Prince was wearing a black outfit.

Around this time last year, Prince kicked off a record breaking 21 night residency at London’s O2 Arena which included some of the most off the hook aftershows the talented musician has ever done.

In fact, those concerts along with Prince’s love for London inspired his upcoming photo book entitled “21 Nights”, which will include a disc of aftershow material from those O2 shows. It is due sometime this fall and we hear there was a slight delay we are told due to promotional reasons. Here is hoping we get a TV appearance or 7. We don’t ask for much, do we?

We are still hoping Prince does a club show somewhere in L.A. like the rumored Vanguard club or elsewhere. As for London, can’t wait to see the book as I know from experience, y’ll are too funky.

London Parties

Ibiza get political

Clubbing doesn’t often get political but next Monday at 7 PM in Vara de Rey, Ibiza, a crowd of dance music fans is expected to take to the streets to publicly protest against what they say are oppressive new laws.

For the first time this year clubs in Ibiza have been banned from opening before 4.30 PM and must close at 6.30 AM, and the ban on afterhours clubbing has had a detrimental effect on the island’s club scene.

Visitor numbers are down, businesses are suffering, and with popular underground venue DC10 having been ordered to stay shut for 60 days, clubbers, DJs and some Ibiza business owners are very angry."

Celeb Spotting at the Ivy

For those with a little cash to splash and an urge to inject some glamour into their lives, the Ivy is the ultimate in London celeb-spotting hangouts.

Strictly reservation only (unless of course you're Madonna, Kate Moss or a member of Westlife), this Covent Garden restaurant serves no-nonsense, quality cuisine, as well as some more extravagant dishes.

From fish and chips to beluga caviar, guests can delight in the tasty food and elegant surroundings.

Walls are adorned with black and white photographers of film stars from days gone by, while a 30s feel is enhanced by oak panels and soft lighting.

For those who don't quite have the bank balance to pay for the Ivy's comfort food, there are plenty of other restaurants in and around Covent Garden, including French restaurant Chez Gerard, pizza place Fire and Stone and the Rock Garden cafe in the centre of the shopping area.

Roof Gardens in Kensington

Just down Kensington Street from the Baglioni Hotel there is a most remarkable rooftop garden that, if open, makes for a lovely afternoon break from sightseeing and shopping in Kensington.

The building was originally known as the Derry and Toms Building and the rooftop gardens, built in the 1930s were appropriately called the Derry and Toms Rooftop Gardens. In the 1980s, Sir Richard Branson bought the gardens and today the Virgin mega-group has an exclusive restaurant and nightclub up there. Call it the Derry and Toms Gardens, The Virgin Group Gardens or Babylon (the restaurant) at the Rooftop Gardens and most anyone in the area will know what you are talking about.

There are in fact three gardens spread over the acre and a half rooftop space. The Spanish garden features Mediterranean flora that manages to grow quite well in England’s less-than-Mediterranean climate. We didn’t see the seasonal blooms as it was winter but this garden was lovely nonetheless. The woodland garden lives up to its name by having a wonderful variety of trees to view. It is remarkable that these trees do so well in only a few feet of soil. The Tudor garden will help remind you that you are in England with it walled spaces and local flora.

While there wasn’t much in bloom in the middle of the winter, the view of west London on a clear winter day was really remarkable. Since the gardens are now mainly marketed as a high-end event space, they are not on the tourist path anymore as they are often closed to the public when events are happening. If the space isn’t booked (as is often the case in the winter), visitors are welcome to head to the roof for a look around. Call ahead to make sure you can see the gardens. It is a wonderful, off-the-beaten-track experience that you shouldn’t miss.

Amy Whitehouse loses the plot on a rampage

But this weekend the 24-year-old went on the rampage in Camden, London, and ended up getting into some fisticuffs with a storefront security fence.

London's Daily Mail reports that the troubled star began her night at around 1am by playfully soaking fans outside her apartment with a high-pressure hose from her garage.

Then she began a crazed sprint through the backstreets, laughing with paps and challenging them to keep up with her.

But her high spirits quickly crashed, and Amy sat down in a storefront doorway -- before savagely attacking its metal security grille.

Clooney hits London nightclub

New York’s famed nightclub Bungalow 8 recently opened it’s doors in London and it’s been heating up every since. Last night Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney made it out for drinks with his old buddy Elle Macpherson. Clooney is a big fan of the NYC hotspot so its no suprise he made a visit to the London location.

Bungalow 8 is the venture of Amy Sacco and is noted as London's best nightspots. Housed in the fashionable St Martin's Hotel, it's a members club that is super exclusive. Good luck to us average Joe's to get into this club.

If you have the lucky pass to get in, here is what to expect. The spot doesn’t get going until the wee hours and don’t expect to see a VIP room because the entire joint is aimed at VIP's. If you’re in this club, then you must be special.

Orchid Nightclub

Last night Orchid nightclub put on a good show, as one of the party goers, British TV star Jodie Marsh showed off her twins.

Although Jodie had a nasty scar on her breasts, she opted to show it off to all the photogs. Jodie hit this London hot spot with her hot boyfriend.

The Orchid club is located in the heart of London’s West End and has been running since April 2008. The nightclub provides 9000 square feet of immaculate space suitable for partygoers and those who just want to chill and listen to great music.

This luxurious spot is a favorite among British socialites and TV stars. Next time you’re in London and want to chill in a good bar / club atmosphere, check out the Orchid club.

did Jay-z hurt the tickets sales of Glasto

Glastonbury will be headlined by a traditional act next year after festival bosses admitted the event lost money.

Eavis said: "We'll probably be going for the more traditional headliner next year because there are more of them around and after this year everyone wants to come onboard because it was such a good do."

Organiser Michael Eavis said the presence of hip hop star Jay Z had helped to convince traditional bands the festival was worthwhile and they would be topping the bill in 2009.

He also revealed fans wanting to attend next year's Glastonbury Festival will be able to reserve their tickets six months in advance for the first time via an innovative deposit system.

From October, 100,000 tickets will be made available for a £50 deposit with fans paying the full amount on April 1.

Ne-Yo at the o2

Ne-Yo's new album is called The Year of the Gentleman - and that was exactly the theme of this hour long offering at the O2's acoustic venue last night.Neyogig

The band wore grey pin-striped suits, the backing dancers wore full ball gowns and Ne-Yo himself sported a black, then white, tuxedo with top hat, bow tie and diamond cane in tow.

He effortlessly mixed an old-fashioned flavour reminiscient of the Rat Pack days with sweetly catchy melodies and established hits like Because of You, Sexy Love and Closer.

Club4Climate ECo Nightclub

Sustainability got sexier last week as Coldcut and Jade Jagger hosted the opening of Surya in King’s Cross. The Club4Climate project is London’s first taste of eco-friendly clubbing, making clubbers happy in the knowledge that their organic beverage-induced booty shaking can generate 60% of the energy needed to run the club. The venue’s most exciting innovation is the piezoelectric dancefloor, which uses quartz crystals and ceramics to turn clubbers’ movement into electricity!

And it’s not the first. Another club in Rotterdam has been going for some time now using the same technology. Clever, isn’t it? I’d love to see more of this. Imagine generating electricity in public spaces like train station concourses or shopping centres, schools, libraries, museums just from the footsteps of the people walking through.

Man shot at london nightclub

A man shot dead outside a London nightclub became the 90th murder victim in the capital this year, Scotland Yard detectives said last night.

The victim, who is said to have been in his 20s, was shot up to six times as he stood talking to his friends in the early hours of yesterday.

Armed police and the London Ambulance Service responded at 3.45am to reports of gunshots outside the Red nightclub, near Limehouse station, East London.

GAY Closes its door for the last time

One of London's most famous gay nightclubs said goodbye at the weekend, but despite speculation that Kylie Mingue would perform at G-A-Y's send-off, her sister Dannii Minogue was there instead.

The Astoria building which hosts G-A-Y nights will be pulled down to make way for a new central London rail project.

She was joined a host of G-A-Y's favourite acts including boy band McFly who once stripped off and performed naked on stage. Others included indie band Texas, former Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz, Sophie Ellis Bextor, The Feeling, Alcazar, up and coming gay singer Sam Sparro and comedian Pam Ann.

Saturday nights at G-A-Y have long featured performances from major pop singing talent including Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, the Suga Babes and Steps.

Sarah Harding having a little fun with another female friend?

Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding seen canoodling with mystery brunette after Brits

Sarah Harding was snapped playfully kissing a female friend in a taxi last night.

The singer was leaving the Brit Awards after-party at the Hempel Hotel, London, and was looking a little worse for wear.

Playing up to the waiting photographers, Sarah, 26, nuzzled her brunette female companion before driving off, reports the Daily Mail.

Girls Aloud lost the Best British Band gong to the Arctic Monkeys at the Earl's Court bash.

Rihanna turns it on!

Rihanna and the Klaxons just finished a duet that took place in a green neon flashing pyramid, whose computer-ized strobes zapped out at the audience, sending the crowd into a tizzy. It was like being in an XBox.

The entire hybridgroup were dressed in some sort of Mad Max, ancient Egyptian ensemble. Rianna descended from a raised dais was their Cleopatra as the Klaxon boys slammed on their guitars like her eager slave boys dressed in rags and what looked like hemp rope.

It was sci-fi and fabulous.

Kylie Looking Hot

Best International Female went to Kylie who regaled the audience with a sci-fi performance even more computerized than the Klaxons and Rihanna.

It featured an LED-type screen flashing neon fluoro lights all over her glittering green slinky dress. She was surrounded by space age dancers in pleather suits every colour of the rainbow. We don’t even want to begin to think how sweaty it must be in there.

Mark Ronson

Mark Ronson, the very boy who has lived in NYC since he was eight years old has just won the Best British Male. He said he, “Never felt more British or more Male in [his] life.”

Kylie at Movida

Kylie Minogue angered hundreds of invited guests after the Brit Awards last night - after they were forced to battle their way into her after party, and were later snubbed by Aussie singer - who wanted to party with a small group

The singer, 39, invited people to party with her at Mo*vida in London’s soho, but the ducked out of sight to a private room at the back of the club.

A source told London’s Metro newspaper: “Winning a Brit Award meant so much to Kylie, you could tell.

"She clearly just wanted to celebrate with her manager, record label and her girlie friends.

“She sneaked in through to her own little party, set up with flowers and loads of buckets of champagne.

“She couldn’t get enough of her own track ‘WOW’ going crazy in the back room, bopping around and head banging with her gal pals when the track was played.”

Soho Revue Bar

Saturday 1st of March will witness London’s newest, sexiest, cheekiest & most innovative club night, ‘House Party’, to be held every Saturday at the West End’s hottest venue Soho Revue Bar (11-12 Walkers CourtSave Now, Brewer Street, Soho, London W1F 0ED).

London Turnmills to Close

Turnmills — one of London's best-known and longest running nightclubs — is about to close to make room for real estate development. The sign on the out side has already been taken down.

A spokesman for Turnmills tells Evening Standard:

"As far as we are concerned our lease is still intact until any legal documents have been signed, which they haven't at this stage and the permission to develop does not mean they need vacant possession for the first phase of the building works. The long-term plan for the building and development far exceeds our existing lease. We are in negotiation with the landlords to buy us out of the remaining lease if they want to bring the development of the basement forward - which they may or may not want to do. It's very early days."
